Thyroid hormone is a naturally occurring substance. Levothyroxine works by stimulating the production of thyroid hormone, usually without causing side effects. It also has some beneficial effects on the thyroid gland, such as reducing the amount of free water in the blood and improving your understanding of how the thyroid regulates your mood.
While levothyroxine is effective for hypothyroidism, treatment of hypothyroidism usually involves treatment of other conditions such as enlarged thyroid glands or thyroid cancer.

Description:Hypothyroid replacement therapy is a condition characterized by the excessive and sometimes disabling use of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroid patients are at an increased risk of developing serious tissue damage, including cancer, heart disease, and stroke. One such condition is thyroid cancer, where the growth of tumor tissue in organs such as the brain, spinal cord, and lungs is reduced. DSH offers a safe and effective treatment option for this common but potentially life-threatening condition. For more information, see in the full CMI.
Dosage:Standard Direction
The usual dosage for hypothyroidism is 2.5 to 10 mg once daily. For thyroid replacement therapy, the typical starting dose is 0.5 to 1.0 mg per day. Based on available data, the typical dosage for thyroid replacement therapy is 0.5 to 1.5 mg daily. DSH accepts US-licensed tablets for dosing.
Hypothyroidism can have several causes. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including medical, nutritional, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The primary culprit behind the development of hypothyroidism is a thyroid hormone called thyroxine (T4) which is synthesized and utilized during the manufacturing process. T4 is crucial in the process of thyroid hormone synthesis, functioning as an important metabolic and immune system regulator. T4 is also necessary for normal development and function of the thyroid. DSH offers a safe and effective treatment option for this condition. For more information, including a full list of prescriptions and over-the-counter (OTC) dosage recommendations, see in the full CMI.
Warnings:Health conditions can increase the risk of developing hypothyroidism. This medication should not be used in individuals with a history of bone marrow or kidney abnormalities. DSH should not be used for individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, liver or blood cell abnormalities, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), or those taking medications that increase the risk of developing these conditions. DSH should be used with caution in individuals with a history of thyroid cancer, adrenal gland tumors, benign thyroid nodules, or thyroid cancer. DSH can decrease the binding of thyroid hormone to plasma proteins and can also cause false negative results. DSH can cause decreased intestinal motility and decreased absorption of the medication. DSH can decrease the effectiveness of T4 therapy in hypothyroid individuals. DSH can cause decreased bone mineral density and decreased bone mineral density in patients with impaired bone formation or in those with impaired skeletal development.
